The Chiefs of Defence exchanged views and ideas on the Nordic security situation, including the implications on capability development in the Nordic countries.
The Nordic Chiefs of Defence met in March with NORDEFCO's Military Coordination Committee, chaired by Finland. The Commander of the Finnish Defence Forces, General Timo Kivinen, concluded: “We will continue to strengthen NORDEFCO as a forum for High-Level military strategic discussions on the Nordic security situation, including the implications on capability development in the Nordic countries”.
In 2021, Finland, as the chair of both political and military level of cooperation, will continue to strengthen NORDEFCO as a structure and implement for NORDEFCO's vision 2025 - to improve the ability to act together in peace, crisis, and conflict. The above-mentioned meeting included a number of topics, such as dialogue on security and defence, and an overview of the current Nordic security situation.
The CHODs emphasized the importance and relevance of concept of Green Defence. As Nordic nations, we all work actively to harmonize environmental requirements. We will continue to study and recommend ways to reduce carbon footprint when deployed and, in addition, explore possibilities for further cooperation within the area of Green Defence in a broader sense.
NORDEFCO adjusts and finds productive ways to preserve and develop defence cooperation. More information about the Finnish Chairmanship of NORDEFCO in 2021 can be found here: Finnish Chairmanship of NORDEFCO
