MINUSMA - Signature of Letter of Intent

On 20 June a rotation concept for the deployment of C-130 transport aircraft to the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Mali, MINUSMA, was signed by Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Portugal and Sweden.

The rotation concept means that the participating nations in turn will deploy a C-130 transport aircraft to the mission. The aircraft contribution will be based at the Norwegian camp Bifrost in Bamako, and will ensure that MINUSMA will have a C-130 aircraft at its disposal until the end of 2018.

The establishment of a rotation concept has been a priority of the Danish NORDEFCO chairmanship and it is the hope that this model of support to UN peacekeeping missions will be used by other UN nations as well, in order to ensure stable long-term commitments of key capabilities to the UN.

At the signature ceremony the UN expressed great satisfaction and gratitude to the five nations, and noted that this model of rational contributions to the UN will help ensure stable and long-term commitments to the UN.
